Jalapão’s Gold.

Golden grass grows in paths of Jalapão, characteristic humid areas in Tocantins’ scrublands.
“Syngonanthus nitens euriocaulaceae” (golden grass’ scientific name) handcrafting started in Mumbuca, a community in the state of Tocantins, Brazil, populated by former slaves. They used traditional techniques and indian influence in the beginning of XX century.

Golden Grass grows during the whole year. It must be gleaned only in September and November. Nowadays, it represents the only source of income for the communities in Ponte Alta, where golden grass is considered Jalapão’s gold.
This material shines more when, at the harvesting, the seeds are taken off and the paths are burnt for next year. However, all this control is based on the standards of nature preservation, guaranteeing species perpetuation.
There are three kinds of golden grass:
- Thin Grass: Shorter, with darker appearance and gleaned on the most humid paths. It’s used for delicate pieces, such as mandalas measuring until 2 centimeters.
- Medium Grass: Gleaned on a less humid side, with long rod, perfect for bracelets and strands.
- Thick Grass: Gleaned on the driest part of the paths, perfect for bigger pieces such as sous-plat, pots, trays, hats, etc.
Nature, design and innovation transform identity and creation in exclusive pieces of modern and natural jewel.
